TROPICAL SUBCLIMATE
Did you know Los Angeles is subtropical Zone 10b
joined only by Hawaii and Florida? This means you
can grow tropical fruits and produce that is too
perishable to grow and transport commercially. So
next to your carrots and tomatoes you can grow
your own dragonfruit, papayas, and even kiwi fruit.
Some edibles you would never thought of will grow in
SoCal including green tea, coffee, sesame seeds,
cinnamon, nutmeg, and even bath sponges! (loofah).
Garden variety fruits and vegetables are great but why
not take advantage of our mediterranean tropical
climate and grow something more adventurous?
Did you know papayas from Brazil travel over 6,500
miles, bananas from Costa Rica 3,500 miles, and even a
tomato or avocado from Mexico can travel 2,000 miles?
And you thought you had a lot of frequent flyer miles!
We’re lucky. California grows 50% of the nation’s fresh
produce, but even from Central California to Los Angeles
these trucks on the road just add to traffic congestion
and use up natural resources.
Fruits and vegetables from commercial farms are picked
green, and subject to harsh conditions en route to the
supermarket. As the days and weeks pass, produce
loses flavor and valuable nutrients. Then there are the
GMO considerations, pesticides used, and irradiation
to prevent spoilage. By growing your own food you can
eat better quality fruits and vegetables from your own
backyard. Your house is worth over a million dollars,
so why grow decorative shrubs when you can have
backyard-fresh foods?
BACKYARD CROP SWAP
Purple passion fruits grown in Manhattan Beach, CA
Since real estate is a premium, and your backyard farm
has growing limitations, it only makes perfect sense
to swap crops with neighbors to increase your variety
of fresh produce. What you grow and your neighbors
grow is probably not the same so you all win by
sharing. Avoid trips to the grocery store or farmer’s
market by participating in a neighborhood
Backyard Crop Swap.
This website is home to a new Beach Cities Backyard
Crop Swap based in Manhattan Beach, CA. I started it
this year, hatched from a simple idea. If you live in
South Bay Beach Cities and interested in participating,
You will receive an e-mail with updates.
So is urban farming just a nutty idea? No. Reports by
FastCompany, LA Times, Forbes Magazine, TechCrunch
and even Vogue magazine show urban farming on the
uptick with some going as far as saying it is the future
of agriculture. So this is not just a fad but a movement!
